Port Dover District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is the overarching guide for subject-area learning in Port Dover’s schools. This curriculum is standards-based, student-centered and able to expand to encompass new subjects and programs. The foundation of the curriculum are the subject-area frameworks in all academic and enrichment subjects. They provide the vision for what students will learn, what they should be able to do, and the steps by which learning will occur. Assessments are aligned to the Ontario Curriculum’s grade level expectations and serve as a measure of academic proficiency.

We currently cover the following Port Dover-area school districts: Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, Grand Erie District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Dover District Curriculum

As students enter high school, core subjects are offered in an Applied and an Academic format. These options provide either a practical or a theoretical approach to the subject, respectively. Once students have completed the foundational courses in grades 9 and 10 in either of these formats, they will be able to choose from many advanced options such as the Outdoor Education programs which offer learning experiences outside of the school.

The curriculum provides for students at all levels of learning so that students requiring remedial instruction are able to receive the additional supports they may need. There are also opportunities to accelerate coursework, take college classes in dual credit programs, and enter into specialized academies such as the International Baccalaureate Program. These opportunities emphasize that students need a strong foundation in core academics as they will be required to do a good amount of reading, writing and problem-solving in these programs.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Children How to Self-monitor Their Reading

To help build children's confidence in reading, parents need to help children develop a type of automatic inner dialogue while reading. This can be demonstrated by asking some of these questions when the children are reading, either alone or together. Soon, the children will begin to ask themselves the questions automatically. They should ask themselves why they are reading a selection and what they expect to learn. They should also ask how is the material is organized and what they already know about it. Finally, they need to determine if they need to vary their speed by their understanding of any new material.
