Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Portage Lakes District Curriculum
Portage Lakes’ high school math curriculum includes an in-depth study of geometric principles. Learners experiment with transformations on a plane as well as making geometric constructions. The concept of congruence is introduced as well, with students learning how to understand congruence in terms of rigid motions. High school math students also work with circles, and develop an understanding of theorems about circles and the application of those theorems to solve problems.
The social studies curriculum in Portage Lakes ensures middle school students have a solid understanding of history and geography before moving on to more in-depth studies in high school. Middle school students explore early human civilizations, including those in India, China, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. Students learn about the common characteristics of these civilizations, as well as their unique characteristics that allowed them to flourish. In geography, students learn how to utilize tools such as maps, globes, and online tools to discover information about various environments and the ways in which people interact with those environments.

- Students Link Up With Akron Symphony - More than 1,600 local public school students have worked this year with the Akron Symphony as part of their music education courses. The special program was made possible by the Weill Music Institute.
