Chalk Talk: Involved Parents Make for Better Students

Much research has been conducted on factors that influence a child’s level of success in school. The primary factor that determines this success is the level of involvement of that child’s parents. Parental involvement is much more than asking what homework your child has or attending one or two parent-teacher conferences a year. Involvement in your child’s everyday learning tasks is extremely important if they are to achieve their highest possible potential. Students whose parents read to them and with them, sit down and help them with their homework, and are communicative with teachers have a much higher level of success in school. This includes higher standardized test scores, better achievement on class assignments, and more timely submission of homework. Students with involved parents also demonstrate better attitudes about education, more dedication to their studies, and improved behavior at school.
