Prince George District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum for all British Columbia schools is developed at the provincial level by the BC Ministry of Education. Students K-12 follow this standard of learning called Prescribed Learning Outcomes, which provides all students with an expected quality of knowledge, skill, and critical thinking as they develop through their formative years. Beyond the core academics, the districts provide students with extracurricular learning opportunities, locally relevant programming, and electives in areas that connect to many students interests.

We currently cover the following Prince George-area school district: School District No. 57.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Prince George District Curriculum

The curriculum has far-reaching literacy and problem-solving goals so that students have abilities critical to success in post-secondary life. Reading and writing is taught so that students can approach different types of texts or reasons for writing analytically and with an understanding of the goals an author, of they as the writer, should convey. Language and vocabulary skills are also emphasized and give students ways to decode meaning in increasingly complex texts.

This curriculum also provides goals which can be used by district administration in order to cover any subjects or courses which are not addressed by the Ministry of Education’s program, providing an adaptable content delivery system that allows teachers to shape the curriculum to suit their specific district. Programs such as AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) are also covered by the Ministry’s provincial curriculum, which can likewise be shaped as needed into individual school districts by the administration.

Chalk Talk: Extracurricular Activities

Many students just emerging into middle school or high school may not know what to do aside from simply attending school. Of course the obvious popular choice is sports, but for those not interested in athletics, it might be time to look into what else your school has to offer. After-school clubs are not only important in teaching new skills otherwise not present in school curriculum, but can center around hobbies and social groups many students may not otherwise come into contact with. Theater, for example, isn’t just acting – it’s tech crew, marketing, and management. A debate team can teach you critical thinking. Mock trial can teach you law and thinking on your feet. These are just a few of the many potential clubs your school may have to offer. Not all schools have these, but there’s always room for new clubs to be created and organized!
