Radford District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students at Radford City School receive an excellent education, each and every day of the school year. This is accomplished by following the Virginia Department of Education’s Standards of Learning, then adding a little creativity and appreciation of the surrounding environment.

We currently cover the following Radford-area school district: Radford City Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Radford District Curriculum

The environment is an influence in the science curriculum from the start. In the first few years the students begin to learn to use their senses to explore. These senses help them as they study nature, including adaptations, and ecosystems. When these students enter high school they have an option of taking biology II which studies Connelly’s Run Stream and its watershed, looking for changes biologically and chemically. An appreciation of nature becomes a part of each student that graduates from Radford City School.

The use of language is developed beginning with building knowledge of the oral language. This is built by working on choral reading and memorizing and reciting short poem. This skill is expanded as the students begin to use their voices and words to speak to individuals and groups. By the time they have finished school, each student has developed comfort in using the spoken word in formal settings.

Chalk Talk: How to Practice Math During the Summer

It seems that when students return to school in the fall, they have forgotten a lot of the knowledge that they worked so hard to obtain. To help them be more successful in their mathematics classes in the fall there are a few activities that can be worked into the summer, or break time fun. One activity is to play games with the children that involve dice, or counting. This will help to maintain a certain number-sense in the younger children. For the middle and older child, encourage the use of the internet, but guide them to websites that have activities that will help to maintain their math skills. No matter which way the math skills are maintained, while working with the child, make sure they do not become frustrated. This could lead to a dislike of the subject, so they would be suspicious of any activity or class that has to deal with mathematics.
