Ramapo District and Curriculum
The districts provide a comprehensive academic program that helps students succeed and meet the challenges of the 21st Century. The district is dedicated to providing all students with an engaging learning program that maximizes each student’s potential and supports high academic achievement. The district’s curriculum is aligned to The New York State P-12 Common Core Learning standards. These standards clearly establish the skills and knowledge student’s need to prepare them for college and the workforce. The district encourages strong collaboration between academic support specialists and classroom teachers to implement a program that includes differentiated instruction and academic intervention based on each student’s strength and weaknesses.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ramapo District Curriculum
Learning experiences in the elementary grades often integrate more than one subject area and may include language arts, math, science, social studies, Spanish, physical education, art and music. The Ramapo School District uses a balanced literacy approach to motivate students to read, inspire them to write and increase their ability to listen critically and communicate effectively.
The districts math program builds a strong foundation, and teaches concepts through application which helps students to understand the meaning of numbers, shapes and data. First grade students begin learning Spanish in the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools Program and explore other world languages such as French, Italian and Chinese. The district’s middle and high school offer a comprehensive academic program with many course options to choose from in English, Social Studies, Math, Science, World Languages, Technology, Physical Activities and Health, and the Visual and Performing Arts.

- AVID Program - The Ramapo School District has begun implementing its Advancement Via Individual Determination program (AVID) into its Central district elementary school. AVID is a research based college readiness program that begins in either 4th or 5th grade and continues through a student’s senior year in high school. The goal of this program is to prepare students for college while they are still in elementary school. The program provides students with strategies for success in school, including organizational and study skills, effective note-taking and goal setting.
- Pathway to Engineering Program - The Pathway to Engineering (PTE) Program is a four year program available to students at Suffern High School who are interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). This Project Lead Program gives students the skills they need to succeed in a global high tech economy as they learn how to apply the engineering process to real world situations.
- Innovative Writing Program - Students in Ms. Sheehy’s sixth grade English/Language Arts class are using the 3D Game Lab WoWin School to help master the sixth grade New York State English/Language Arts Common Core Learning Standards. This course based management system is helping students write powerful paragraphs with strong claim statements supported by direct quotes and text references. Students assume the role of a character to complete quest-based assignments on-line while investigating Myth: Not Just Long Ago and The Lightening Thief.

“Eat Your Breakfast – It’s the Most Important Meal of the Day”. For generations children have been hearing their parents utter those words! Today’s families usually spend their mornings rushing around to get to school or work on time and think it is easier to grab a pastry as they rush out the door Here are some tips to help today’s busy families eat a nutritious breakfast that are as quick and easy as that donut but without the sugar rush! One item should be selected from each of the following food groups to ensure your family has the energy, and nutrients needed to help them through their busy day: 1) Cereal, toast, or muffin (bread and grain) 2) Yogurt, Cheese, Low-Fat Milk (Milk & Milk Products) 3) Banana, Apple, Orange (Fruit and Vegetable) These are all no “muss-fuss” breakfast items. Also make sure you pick up healthy “on the go” items from the supermarket such as yogurt and granola bars. Eating a healthy breakfast is proven to help your child do better in school and improve test scores by providing them with the energy, vitamins and minerals they need to pay attention for longer periods of time.
