Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Raritan Township District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Flemington-Raritan, Hunterdon Central and Hunterdon County Polytech Districts is driven by the recommendations found in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These documents outline the knowledge and skills that students should acquire at each grade level in all core subject areas.

The world languages standards has three strands. First, students learn language in the interpretive mode, in which they acquire the skills needed to carry out spoken and written communication. Communication in this mode is passive and one-way - students read texts, listen to the radio or watch videos to facilitate their understanding of the language. Next, students engage in the active and two-way interpersonal mode, where they communicate in oral or written form directly with another person. Lastly, the presentational mode requires students to provide information in oral and/or written form to an audience.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Physical Education

Keeping kids active can be a tall task in today’s social media-driven and highly technological world. As kids spend more time involved in sedentary activities like texting, tweeting and playing video games, it becomes more and more important for them to participate in physical activity to stay healthy. Physical education classes provide kids with an opportunity to engage in physical activity, but also help students learn about wellness, disease prevention and healthy living habits. Aside from promoting an active lifestyle and encouraging kids to maintain fitness, physical education classes act as a preventative measure against many diseases including obesity, heart disease and diabetes that are afflicting an increasing number of young people.
