Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Raton District Curriculum

The Raton Public School District is in the process of implementing the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) approved by New Mexico for use in all public schools. In response to Common Core the district has implemented uninterrupted ninety minutes of structured instruction in math and reading. In English and Language Arts (ELA) students are introduced to reading material that is varied in nature including literature and informational text, fiction and nonfiction. In addition, students learn to develop skills of critical analysis, interpretation, and reading for evidence.

In Mathematics, the focus is on learning core skills of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability and proportional reasoning. The curriculum is progressive with students building on the math skills they learned the previous year. The goal is for students to be math literate by the time they graduate so that they can apply their skills to the workforce and in higher math.
