Renton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Renton Public Schools is dedicated to providing education for all students to meet their individual needs. To reach this goal, the district has implemented curriculum and programs that aim to provide services to learners at all levels. The curriculum in the district is written to build on what the students learned the year before, culminating in advanced learning opportunities in the final year of high school. Ninth and tenth grade curriculum focus on reading and writing. Reading skills developed in these two grades include word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, elements of literature comprehension and analysis. The students read both The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet in their first year of high school. Tenth grade shifts the focus of reading to non-fiction and business reading.

We currently cover the following Renton-area school district: Renton School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Renton District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum in the district follows the Washington State Standards for mathematics, offering students advanced level math classes in addition to the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 sequence required for graduation. The district also offers basic classes in Algebra and Geometry to offer support to students who do not have the basic math skills to be successful in these classes.

Students in science will start their high school career with ninth grade physical science, which offers an overview of Physics, Chemistry and the Nature of Science. In tenth grade students are required to take Biology. After passing both Physical Science and Biology, students can choose from Chemistry or Physics to complete their science requirements. The district also offers AP courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Chalk Talk: Deciding if a Tutor Is Needed

Parents have to decide at times if their child is unmotivated in their studies or if they are truly struggling. Before deciding that a child needs a tutor, parents need to look at the amount of time and money that is needed for a tutor. Next, parents should look over the child’s assignments to see if they are having difficulties that the parent cannot help with. Another issue may be if the child has a learning disability in which case a tutor will need to be found that has worked with children with the same issues. If a child seems to be able to understand materials but they go blank or become stressed at test, tutors may be able to help the child. Every child can find a benefit from some help with their school work at times and at time there are after-school programs which are free and are manned by either a teacher or teacher guided group.
