Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Reston District Curriculum

Language arts courses in Fairfax County Public Schools emphasize communication skills in many areas, including writing and speaking. Group assignments, interviews, and presentations are utilized in these courses, as are classical and contemporary texts. Students in grades K-5 will learn basic strategies to increase reading comprehension, as well as learn to use information from a variety of sources. In advanced courses, students are required to demonstrate the acquisition of research and critical thinking skills through writing assignments.

In physical education courses, students are required to demonstrate competence in a variety of physical activities that include both individual and team sports. In all grade levels, students will learn how to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. The ability to work with peers will also be emphasized, in addition to specific fine motor skills and game strategies. In high school, students can choose to participate in specific activities, such as aquatic and dance.
