Richfield District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Sevier School District is implementing the Utah Core Standards, which are the local version of the Common Core State Standards, a national program to help insure that all students graduate from high school ready for success in college and careers. The goal of the new Common Core standards is to reduce the gap between the level of work students are doing at the end of high school and the work they are doing in college. In order to support this increase in difficulty, the new standards include higher benchmarks for student achievement beginning in elementary school so that by the time students reach high school, they will have the foundation to allow them to do the more complex work being asked of them.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Richfield District Curriculum
In English Language Arts, the standards focus attention to different types of writing, including writing with argumentation; an emphasis on informational text from kindergarten through twelfth grade; and standards for speaking and listening skills, as well as literacy in science, social science, and technology. The Mathematics curriculum has been revised to meet international standards, to help prepare American students to compete in the global marketplace.
Different branches of Mathematics, like algebra, geometry, and statistics, are integrated throughout the curriculum, to help students see the connections between them. The emphasis throughout the curriculum is on applying the skills learned, not merely being able to perform operations repetitively. Sevier School District is engaging in ongoing professional development for teachers, to make sure that the staff of the entire district is prepared to implement the new curriculum.

- Elementary School Recruits Parent Volunteers - Pahvant Elementary School in Richfield has been very successful in recruiting parent volunteers to help out throughout the school. Over fifty parents volunteer every week, in a wide variety of roles. Volunteers help with instruction in the classroom, working one-on-one or in small groups with students, or help manage special events and programs for students.
- Students Encourage Voter Turnout - Turnout in a municipal election in Richfield more than doubled because of the work of an elementary school principal and her students. The principal of Ashman Elementary talked with her students about the election, and encouraged her students to ask their parents to go vote. Many voters showed up with their Ashman students, who were excited to see how the democratic process works at home.
- Agriculture Students Meet in Richfield - For the second year in a row, the Sevier Valley Center hosted the state convention of the Future Farmers of America, including students from Richfield and throughout Sevier School District, as well as the rest of Utah. Students attended workshops and speeches to learn more about agriculture. Manystudents also received scholarships or prizes.
