Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Richland Center District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum for elementary learners introduces students to topics related to geography. Latitude, longitude, and other directional concepts are discussed, with learners acquiring the ability to effectively read a map. Students work with various types of maps as well, including political and topographic maps. An exploration of natural features is undertaken as well. Children learn about deserts, mountain ranges, and oceans, and explore the types of plant and animal life that live in each area.

A central part of the engineering curriculum is the study of electronics. Students in middle school learn about materials that insulate and conduct electricity. Students also become familiar with electronic terminology, such as voltage, resistance, current, and power. The difference between AC and DC electricity is discussed as well. Students also learn how to correctly identify various electronic components, to include control devices, insulators, conductors, and loads. Various methods of producing electricity are explored as well.

Chalk Talk: Vocational Education Has Its Benefits

Vocational education provides high school students with a variety of benefits. Students have the opportunity to explore different career areas and get some hands-on experience in that field of work at the same time. The hands-on nature of vocational education also makes it much more engaging for students. Not only do learners take a more active role in their learning, they also remember much more. Because vocational programs give students a head start in a career, they are one step ahead of the game when they graduate. Many students can participate in internships or apprenticeships right out of high school, making vocational education an excellent choice for students that wish to begin work immediately.
