Riverdale District and Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core Standards, which offer all students an equal education, regardless of location. The overarching purpose of these standards is to promote a love of learning so that students take ownership of their own learning and will therefore be ready to compete in our increasingly global environment. The district believes in creating a creating a culture of achievement and promoting excellence by providing students with meaningful learning and dedicated teachers.

We currently cover the following Riverdale-area school districts: Community Unit School District 100, School District 133, and School District 148.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Riverdale District Curriculum

By utilizing a comprehensive curriculum focused on foundational ideas, the school tries to encourage intellectual, physical, and moral development in all students, regardless of economic background or other factors. Community Unit School District 100 strives to provide an environment that focuses on rigorous, supportive educational opportunities, in which students are challenged but also supported and given interventions as necessary.

The curriculum, itself, is predicated upon the assumption that critical thinking skills lead to self-realization and learning. Students solve problems by analyzing information which they gather, test, and evaluate to create strategies. Students are encouraged to draw their own conclusions, whether it be in English or humanities classes, or in science classes. Students develop theories and theses and support these with evidence. Students are also given opportunities to apply their learning to real-world situations.

Chalk Talk: Standardized Test Scores

The traditional view of college admissions practices holds that SAT and ACT scores are vitally important to consider when seeking to gain admittance, second only to the high school transcript itself. This is because the purpose of standardized test scores was to help determine how well a student would do in college, based on how well they did on testing. But standardized test scores are no longer considered as important as they once were. New studies have shown that the correlation between high test scores and college success isn’t a strong one. Some students simply don’t test well. Some students test very well but don’t perform as well as they test. These are thing that teachers, parents, and students have known for as long as there have been tests, and finally, colleges are listening. They are looking at students’ applications more holistically, and some colleges no longer require test scores at all.
