Rock Falls District and Curriculum

The Rock Falls Elementary and Rock Falls High School Districts use the Illinois Learning Standards which have incorporated Common Core Standards in Math and Language Arts. Other subjects are covered by detailed frameworks that lay out the yearly learning expectations that students should meet. The curriculum has many goals including the development of skills, knowledge and concepts, and the ability to relate learning to real world applications. Students are encouraged to think critically about their learning and to develop a sense of independence in the direction their learning takes.

We currently cover the following Rock Falls-area school districts: Rock Falls Elementary School District and Rock Falls High School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rock Falls District Curriculum

Teachers are given the freedom to modify their lesson plans to match the individual needs of their students, whether that mean remedial work to help students catch up to grade level or advanced assignments to challenge students working beyond grade level. Students are given clear expectations of what they should learn by the end of each school year to stay on track for curriculum expectations. The curriculum is rigorous and challenging. It stresses critical thinking skills across disciplines.Students also learn critical reading skills by exploring a variety of different types of texts.

Students write analytical essays based on their reading. They develop theories as to authorial intent, content, and structural questions, among other things, and gather evidence to support their theories, which they present in written essays and oral presentations. Science literacy is also stressed. Students study the natural world and develop theories and techniques to solve problems, which they test in real-world situations. The school offers a supportive environment in which students are encouraged to strive to meet their full potential.

Chalk Talk: Early Action Applications

Early Action (EA) applications are early, non-binding college applications. They tend to have a hard due date of November 15, though it can vary from college to college. This means that all materials, including standardized test scores, must be submitted by this time. They are also non-binding applications, which means that students can apply to other schools without any commitment or penalty. Because they’re early application, fewer students tend to use them, which means that the pool is smaller. This favors early applicants, who tend to be strong, as evidence by the fact that they’ve managed to complete an application early. Colleges tend to select a large percentage of applicants from early applicant pools, which means this can be a beneficial move.
