Chalk Talk: Tips for Taking the ACT

Taking the ACT can be an anxiety-provoking experience for many students. If your child is worried about their exam, there are several ways you can help them prepare ahead of time to reduce their anxiety. First, reiterate that your child needs to read the instructions and each question very carefully. While it seems like a simple enough task, many students miss critical information by simply skimming over the instructions or questions. Second, remind your son or daughter that they need to complete the easy questions first. Doing so will help them stay on pace without spending too much time on difficult questions. If time is running low, your child should go back and fill in an answer for every question, even if they guess. Leaving questions blank will negatively impact their score. Lastly, there are many books and online tools that provide practice tests and other study aids. Provide these tools for your child in order to familiarize them with the ACT.
