Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Roselle Park District Curriculum

The primary underpinning of the Roselle Park School District curriculum is the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, which establish grade-level learning targets for students in seven areas of study: health and physical education, the arts, 21st Century life and careers, technology, world languages, science and social studies. The Common Core State Standards, which have been adopted by over 40 states, separately govern what students learn in math and language arts classes.

The elementary language arts curriculum focuses student learning on acquiring writing skills, where students learn the letters of the alphabet, how to spell and how to write. By the end of elementary school, students have the ability to write in complete sentences and compose well-formed paragraphs. The middle school curriculum builds on this foundation, where students learn how to write with an appropriate voice for persuasive essays, narrative pieces and research papers. The high school curriculum helps students acquire advanced writing skills, such as the ability to collate information from various sources into a well-organized essay.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Effective Speaking Skills

Public speaking is a skill that is essential in the modern workforce and in life in general, yet many people have a crippling fear of it. That notwithstanding, acquiring effective public speaking skills delivers many more benefits than the ability to speak in front of a crowd. People who engage in public speaking have increased self-confidence when around others. This confidence is evident not just when interacting with a large group, but in one-on-one and small group situations as well. Public speakers tend to have larger vocabularies, better voice tone and an increased ability to connect with people as well. Additionally, people who can speak in public enjoy greater influence and more leadership roles at work and in their communities. Thus, having the ability to communicate effectively with others opens the doors for personal, professional and social growth.
