Roswell District and Curriculum

The Roswell Independent School District oversees the public schools in the city of Roswell, New Mexico. Partnerships with both local and national organizations allow the schools in the district to offer innovative academic programs and opportunities for students. Students learn skills they will need for both advanced education and to be successful in the workforce. The public schools in the Roswell Independent School District are in the process of implementing the new Common Core State Standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Roswell District Curriculum

The curriculum is geared at providing students with the skills they need to be successful as adults particularly in the areas of English and Language Arts and Mathematics. In English and Language Arts, the focus is on learning to read, write and also to listen carefully and to speak using correct English. Students are provided with a variety of reading material including informational text and classic and contemporary literature. In addition, students learn critical analysis skills to evaluate texts and to use in their writing.

In Mathematics, the Common Core Curriculum is restricted to certain math subjects which students learn in a progressive manner, building on their math skills with each grade. The math subjects included in the curriculum are computational skills, geometry, algebra, probability and statistics. Once students are proficient in these core math subjects they are expected to be able to apply these skills to quantitative thinking in the real world and in learning higher math.

Keeping Informed: Recent Roswell Educational News

  • Business Professionals of America - Goddard High School has an active chapter of the Business Professionals of America (BPA). The BPA which is a national organization is committed to helping students succeed in business and information technology careers. The chapter of BPA meets on a monthly basis for organizational activities and is involved in fundraising and community activities and participates in annual competitions.
  • Fundraising Events with Key Club - The Key Club at Goddard High School has recently been involved in a variety of fundraisers for the community of Roswell, New Mexico. Their recent projects have included the Trek for Trash, the Kiwanis Pancake Day and the Can Food Drive. The Key Club is a service organization for kids who want to get involved in their community.
  • Learning About Agriculture - High School students in the Roswell Independent School District are invited to participate in the Future Farmers of America organization. The goals of the national organization are to instill personal leadership skills, and to learn about vocational agriculture and agribusiness in a hands on environment. Any high school student can participate in the organization if they are enrolled in agriculture education.

If you are unable to visit the museum in person the museum website provides all kinds of information on different activities to do at home. Skill building play ideas include storytelling ideas to encourage creativity and improve language skills, explore art with mud painting, learn to move like an animal, play with bubbles and find out how to build a dragon boat. Instructions are clear and detailed in activity sheets parents can print out for fun at home activities for the whole family.
