Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rutherford District Curriculum

To ensure students acquire the knowledge and skills they need for success, standards to measure their learning have been developed. The Common Core State Standards outline what students should learn in math and language arts classes. Benchmarks for student learning in science, technology, 21st Century life and careers, health and physical education, the arts, world languages and social studies are governed by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

The district is committed to helping students acquire the ability to use technology to solve problems, advance their educations and communicate in a safe manner. Students learn how to use digital tools to create text-based and multimedia presentations. Students learn about the dangers of online communication, and learn strategies to ensure they remain safe when surfing the web and communicating with others via social media. From learning the essential parts of a computer to searching databases for solutions to real-world problems in high school, students are engaged at every level in understanding technology.

Chalk Talk: Why Youth Sports Are Important

Getting kids involved in sports does much more than help their physical development and ability to work well as part of a team. Sports provide many other benefits that help kids become better students as well. Kids who play sports exhibit higher self-esteem and a better self-concept, which helps them perform better both in sports and in academics. Playing sports also gives students a vehicle by which they learn the value of goal-setting. Goals to improve their volleyball serve or their jump shot aren’t unlike goals to improve their social studies grade or get better at adding fractions: either way, kids learn how to make steady progress towards improving themselves and reap the rewards of hard work.
