The Salamanca City Central School District has a mission to provide appropriate educational opportunities for students that will prepare them for college, post high school coursework, and the labor force. Instilling a love of learning that will serve students throughout their life is also of vital important to the district. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Salamanca District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum ensures that students will learn the same basic skills across all schools in New York State. The curriculum applies to English & Language Arts, and Mathematics. The English & Language Arts curriculum focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking using correct English. In an effort to prepare students for both college and the labor force, students read both informational text and important literature. An emphasis is placed on the development of critical analysis skills at all grade levels.

In Mathematics, students follow a prescribed curriculum learning computation, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. The coursework is progressive and builds on student skills year by year. The focus is on ensuing that students become fluent in Mathematics by the end of High School and that they possess the necessary skills and confidence to take on higher math in college if they so choose and to utilize their skills in the workplace.

Keeping Informed: Recent Salamanca Educational News

  • 3 Sisters Gardens - Students who are involved in the Environmental Sciences classes at the high school have planted a vegetable garden, featuring native vegetables like white corn. The students investigate agricultural techniques with an emphasis on local sustainability through this project.
  • Sources of Strength - The Sources of Strength Project has been adopted for high schoolers to offer a model of peer mentoring and positive adult-child communications. The project is aimed at increasing awareness of the challenges of adolescence and the need for teens to learn how to build a positive safety net around them.
  • Weather Machine Contest - Students from Prospect Elementary worked diligently on the Weather Machine Contest, a creative way to help kids learn about weather, meteorological terminology, and the broader impact of weather. The whole community pitched in to this learning effort, including local access cable stations that featured some of the learning material on their station.

Chalk Talk: Resources for Budding Astronomers

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is taking an unusual approach to introducing art to children. At the museum website you will find several Sing a Long interactive games for children. The sing alongs are geared toward children ages 3 -7 and utilize easy well known songs which are paired with different works of art. The interactive program introduces artists and their work such as Cezanne, Degas, Renoir, and Van Gogh through the medium of music. After singing songs about the paintings, kids are encouraged to find different things in the paintings.
