Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sallisaw District Curriculum

In Mathematics, concepts learned consist of determining the probability in a given situation. The expression of probability by using fractions from zero to the whole number of one is done by the use of spinners, diagrams, and hands-on choosing of manipulatives. With probability, the students are given various events, such as “What is the probability of choosing a red candy out of six colors?” The instructor gives the students many opportunities and strategies to figure out probability, and to express the data received from the results through pictographs, pie graphs, line graphs, and bar graphs.

In English Language Arts, the instructors teach such skills as handwriting. Penmanship is taught beginning at the onset of the students’ school career and lasts throughout the elementary grades. The students learn print and how to properly form each letter and number correctly, and practice with writing the letters in isolation and within their writing (sentences and paragraphs).
