Educating Our Parents: Understanding the San Antonio District Curriculum

Students begin their mathematics education by learning the basics of counting. Students learn to assign each object in a set with a specific number and when they master this they learn how to combine sets together to create addition equations. They also learn how to take objects away to create subtraction equations. With these, plus multiplication and division, students are prepared to face algebraic or statistical equations with confidence.

Writing begins with the introduction of letter formation. At San Antonio schools, children learn that each letter is created differently. After this is mastered, they begin to learn how letters are joined together to create words. They then learn how to form sentenced and paragraphs to convey their ideas into the written language. Students learn different forms of writing, such as narrative, persuasive or expository, and they learn how to write for specific audiences.

I am passionate about education. I believe that learning is a lifelong process, and that there is always something new to learn. I enjoy teaching, and I strive to make it an enjoyable and fun experience for students. I like to empower students to feel confident in their abilities to succeed in their educational endeavors.
Each person learns in different ways, and finding the right way to present the information is the key. As a tutor, I guide the students to find information to help them understand concepts.
Students of all backgrounds deserve the best possible educational experience. There is no room for haves and have nots when it comes to giving all students an equal shot at the American Dream. Also, it doesn’t matter how “smart” students are but how hard they work. I believe in the growth mindset versus the fixed mindset.
