Educating Our Parents: Understanding the San Diego District Curriculum

In Language Arts and Math, the Common Core Standards is the framework that is used. The assessments that are given statewide in literacy and math are aligned to these standards. The areas of teaching in Math encompass numerical operations, algebraic operations, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability each year. The knowledge builds upon itself year by year so that students have an experience that deepens their knowledge and builds their problem-solving, logic, and mathematical reasoning skills.

In Language Arts, the Common Core Standards emphasize reading literary and informational texts, writing and revising processes, listening, and speaking. The emphasis on all these areas helps to develop critical thinking and analytic skills in students. Social Studies, History, Languages, the Sciences and other subjects and programs provide curriculum that similarly describe the major learning areas of the subject and the skills involved.

California Tutors

As a special education teacher, I truly feel that all children are capable of learning. Taking the time to help a student figure out how they best learn not only helps them while they are in school, but teaches them the skills they will need in order to be successful in their work environment and in life as well.
When students feel and believe that the teacher really cares about their success they respond positively and advance. Even more important than content is caring.
“A good teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary.” – Thomas Carruthers From my perspective, a good teacher is the one who takes on the role of a facilitator rather than the authority. He understands that his job is not to be a keeper of knowledge, but a vessel to pass it on.

Chalk Talk: Tips to Destress

Life as a student, whether in high school or university, may get tough at times. We all deal with a range of issues in addition to the multiple assignments and tests to study for. High levels of stress may lead to health problems in the future which would be best to avoid. In order to keep grounded and cope with stress, one must find their own “happy place” to help keep their mind free of overwhelming thoughts. This may seem cheesy, but once you try out this tip, you may find enjoyment as a result.

Find a Hobby

Since we all have interests and enjoyment from doing certain activities, hobbies can branch off from there. Some common hobbies include exercising, reading, star gazing, writing music and so much more. Start by thinking about what takes your mind off of your hardships and continuing doing that once in a while. Personally, I enjoy reading science fiction novels because they introduce me to a new world giving me a chance to live another life. Just set 30 minutes to an hour every one or two days and you will look forward to it and feel much better.
