Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sand Springs District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, in the elementary grades, students are taught many strategies for spelling. Phonics and spelling instruction’s guidelines are provided by the Department of Education, and the teachers teach many rules of spelling to the students, such as blends, digraphs, medial vowels, consonant-controlled vowels, and exceptions. The students learn how to spell properly though lessons on individual phonics’ rules, through their practice in writing, word study cards and activities, and through vocabulary acquisition.

In Mathematics, elementary students learn how to estimate to the nearest one, ten, and hundred. They learn the rules for rounding (when to round up and when to round down), and not only estimate and round simple numbers, but other concepts as well. These other concepts include the estimation of temperature using a thermometer, length by the inch and centimeter, time, measurement of weight and capacity.

Chalk Talk: How Phonics Are Used in the Classroom

Teaching phonics is very important in the elementary classroom. When phonics is taught in conjunction with other reading concepts, such as comprehension, vocabulary, word origins, onset and rhyme, and more, the students become better spellers along with becoming better readers. Some teachers have a time in the day where they teach phonics exclusively, and many have a word list to go by. Usually phonics lessons last about `15-30 minutes, depending on the teacher. Practicing spelling in isolation prepares the students for writing difficult, multi-syllabic words!
