Satsuma District and Curriculum

Satsuma is a city school district within the county of Mobile and is steadfast in supporting the academic achievement and the future of all students. Although a smaller school system, Satsuma offers great opportunity and advancement for its students. It has a true community feel, as this school system has a School Board that has had a long-term dedication to the City of Satsuma.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Satsuma District Curriculum

The Alabama Standards of Learning are designed to raise students’ understanding of the core subjects over the years. The curriculum focuses in on key areas of learning, as in Math with the emphasis on numeracy, algebraic thinking, geometric understanding, and the ability to perform quantitative data analysis. In English courses, all texts are taught so that students learn how to read across the curriculum and are able to make the most of texts from other courses.

Satsuma High School offers a wide assortment of coursework for high-achieving students. College preparatory classes are offered, such as Honor’s courses, career tech and business education. In career tech, students are taught how to make sound decisions on their future and they are given the skills needed to prepare them. Skills such as computer programming, accounting, personal finance, keyboarding, and bookkeeping are taught.

Keeping Informed: Recent Satsuma Educational News

  • Softball Field Dedication - Pat Hicks, a beloved School Board member, was honored at a dedication ceremony. Satsuma Board of Education and the community of Satsuma attended the event to dedicate the new softball field to her in remembrance of her great doings and deeds in this community. Satsuma High, at the softball field, is where the ceremony took place, and seeing all of the people that attended showed the true love, the meaning, and impact she had upon many.
  • Exhibit Winners - Ms. Lamar and her students won first place at the State Fair of Gulf, for the display on “Kick Breast Cancer.” This state fair is very popular among many people of the area and beyond, as it has so much to do, such as games, amusement rides (over 57 of them!), food, vendors, and fun displays. The community of Satsuma is very proud of this school’s exhibit and their hard work really paid off!
  • Scholarship For Young Women - There is a scholarship available for junior girls who live in Satsuma and in Mobile County. There are scholarships that focus on talent, achievement, community service, interviewing, and grades. Last school year every young lady that entered won something of varying amounts (there were over 25 juniors who applied). A total of 4.5 million dollars was spent on this scholarship in cash! Good luck to all the entrants!

Chalk Talk: The Role of Speech Therapists

Speech therapists identify and help students who have a variety of speech and other developmental issues. Speech therapists in the school system usually screen babies and toddlers of the community to see if they may need early intervention. During the school year, the speech therapist has sessions with students in all grade levels that are either in a group or individualized.
