Chalk Talk: Tips for Working With ADHD

Attention Deficit Disorder (with or without Hyperactivity, referred to here as ADHD for convenience) has been showing a clinical increase over the years. Because of this, there is a greater likelihood you will encounter students with this condition in your classroom or learning center. Some of these students may receive medication to help them focus; however, many will not. Furthermore, if you are working with these students after school hours, students who have the benefits of medication throughout the day are receiving less medication toward evening or may even be taken off these medications on weekends and school breaks. Here are a few tips to help students with various focusing issues in your classroom or other teaching situation: 1. Schedule frequent breaks. 2. Allow the student to have some kind of tactile stimulation (in order to release energy) as they are learning, as long as they continue to focus on the lesson and not the substitute focus. 3. Consider the environment (ensure extraneous noises are removed, student’s chair is comfortable, etc.). 4. Allow student to work in alternate area if he prefers, as long as he is not distracting to others.
