Chalk Talk: Three Reasons to Volunteer

Many school districts now require students to participate in service learning hours as part of their graduation requirements. This focus on volunteerism provides students with a number of benefits. First, volunteering one’s time reduces stress and increases feelings of self-worth. By helping others, students get a better idea of what it means to be part of the community as well. Second, volunteerism gets kids involved in potential career areas. Their experiences volunteering with local organizations may well pique interest for a potential career path. Lastly, students learn a lot about themselves, their community, and government by participating in service activities. Students may discover hidden talents or interests, learn about local resources of which they were previously unaware, and develop an appreciation for the function of government in meeting the needs of citizens.
