Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Seymour District Curriculum

In kindergarten, students will learn how to interact with their environment in their social studies classes, in particular. Each class contains lessons in the areas of geography, history, government, and economics. Students in middle school will focus on American history and government, as well as the climate and agricultural systems of this country. In high school, social studies courses will increase knowledge in history, sociology, economics, and geography.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to take elective courses that will allow them to explore their interests. Such classes include, visual arts, dance, world languages, and computer science. The Seymour School District allows students to create their own educational or career path and provides guidance to ensure they will excel. Students will continue to take classes in all core subjects, but the focus of the class will change depending on what pathway is chosen. This preparation will assure that students graduating have the skills necessary for college.

Chalk Talk: Importance of Parental Involvement in Students’ Education

Parental involvement can result in substantial benefits in students’ schooling, as well as their own. When parents provide support and encouragement, it has been noted that students achieve better grades and test scores. Better attendance has also been linked to this phenomenon. Along with these benefits comes a higher rate of completed homework and a more optimistic attitude toward school. Overall, this leads to higher self-esteem and motivation in those students whose parents are actively involved in their education. For parents, a greater amount of interaction, and therefore, higher confidence in school-related decision-making, may occur when they are involved. Educators will experience improved relationships and communication between themselves and parents. Research has also found that schools with actively involved parents have better reputations than those that do not. Education and parental involvements have many positive associations that will lead to the development of a well-rounded and healthy community.
