Shaker Heights District and Curriculum

We currently cover the following Shaker Heights-area school district: Shaker Heights City School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shaker Heights District Curriculum

The curriculum emphasizes English Language Arts and Math while expecting students to build on skills developed progressively through each grade. The early primary grades in English emphasize reading, spelling with attention to vocabulary acquisition, listening, speaking, writing, and determining and recalling simplistic themes and main ideas. Comparing themes and topics related to different cultures and perspectives is encouraged in senior grades. Once students enter high school, deeper reading and analysis of novels and short stories to produce coherent essays is expected.

Mathematics in the primary grades enables students to learn how to solve practical problems using addition and subtraction while understanding how to decipher the common relationship between problems. Senior grade math focuses on students being able to analyze and apply multiplication, division, fractions and measurement, and using shapes in relation to practical daily situations.

Chalk Talk: Karate- More Than Just a Hobby

Many parents decide to enroll their children in sports. However, karate seems to be high on the list for hobbies and activities that seem to nurture self-confidence, skill development, and self-esteem. Many parents are seeing the effects of bullying becoming prominent in schools all over the world. But karate teaches children to cope with self-defense in a non-violent way and to love themselves for their uniqueness and ability to be assertive, not aggressive. Karate helps children get into shape. It teaches politeness, self-respect and respect for others and allows for problem solving without resorting to threatening others. Karate allows one to respect others' personal boundaries and it teaches self-discipline--a skill that is becoming more important as part of character education.
