Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sharon District Curriculum

The Language Arts program in elementary school balances reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and the Mathematics and Science programs closely align with state performance expectations. The focus on literacy development in the schools is intended to support learning across the curriculum. Students read non-fiction alongside fiction to pick up reading strategies which they will use in their Science or History courses. Research skills are a part of the Language Arts curriculum and also enable students to branch out into other subjects.

The high school includes detailed curriculum for college preparatory programs (including preparation for liberal arts, engineering and business), academic, and vocational programs. Preparation in elementary and middle school is designed to equip students for academic rigor and adult life. One goal of the curriculum is to provide relevant connections between academic subjects and real-world applications so that students are able to recognize the value of their learning.

Chalk Talk: Balanced Literacy

Reading fluently and using ideas in expressive writing are two sides of a balanced literacy coin. Those basic skills begin in primary school when children first draw pictures and write captions for them. They develop with increasingly complexity through middle and high school. If your student is having problems with reading, written expression, or other academic requirements, tutors can help teach the skills needed to communicate and succeed.
