Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shawnee District Curriculum

In English Language Arts in the early primary grades, the students will develop phonological and phonemic awareness. The teacher instructs the students how to count syllables within the words and to manipulate beginning sounds, ending sounds, and medial vowel sounds. The students are exposed to many types of rhyming words, first being one syllable words, and then multisyllabic words. Blending the phonemes of the word sounds to create one word is also taught, and making the sounds of the phonemes in isolation is also instructed.

In Mathematics, the students in grades K-12 are taught how to reason and think logically. Using grade-appropriate materials, such as manipulatives or other small items that can be used during hands-on instruction, the students are taught to use inductive and deductive reasoning skills in many aspects of the mathematical curriculum. The students are also taught how to reason spatially, logically, and proportionally in the middle to later years of math instruction.

Chalk Talk: Phonemic Awareness: How Does it Help Beginning Readers?

When small children first experience being read to, they enjoy the story without really knowing the concept of word. Once school begins, the students then learn to look at print differently. They learn about what makes up a word, each individual sound, and from this knowledge they begin to understand how reading is accomplished. When manipulating the individual sounds, or phonemes, through rhyming, onset sounds, medial vowels, ending sounds, and repetition and the substitution of sounds, they learn great knowledge about how words are formed, and there foundation of reading begins to build.
