Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shiloh District Curriculum

The school maintains high academic standards, but intervention is possible for students who need it. The goal is to have all students succeed in meeting the learning objectives and to provide both support and enhancements to the curriculum as necessary for each student. The learning objectives are written so that teachers are able to employ their own creativity in delivering each lesson.

The curriculum follows the Illinois Common Core Standards, which place emphasis on reading nonfiction texts, writing analytical essays, and a study of the physical world. Critical thinking is the core of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop a rich work ethic that will cause them to take responsibility for their own learning, which will cause them to continually strive to perform up to their greatest potential and abilities in all areas. Students are also taught to utilize technology effectively, and to maintain a solid work ethic while organizing their own time and planning.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for Examination

All high school students know that they will face major examinations, both end of year tests as well as tests like the ACT and SAT. Before a student begins studying, however, they should take into consideration the factors which will help them study most effectively. Planning for a quiet location, knowing what types of supports will be needed, thinking about a study partner for some subjects and a tutor for other subjects, all should be planned for prior to the start of studying time. If you work with a tutor, studying after your tutoring session is very important, as well. Even if you think that you understand the topic perfectly, practice will always help. Also, understand that more than appointment may be needed for you to properly understand the topic that you’re confused about. Getting a tutor can be a worthwhile investment but work is needed on your part to make the most of it.
