Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shiloh District Curriculum

Shiloh’s physical education curriculum begins in elementary school where children learn basic motor skills and movement patterns. Children use non-locomotor skills, such as bending, twisting, and turning, to develop a more refined capacity for motor movements. Running, jumping, and skipping are a few of the locomotor skills emphasized in elementary school as well. Children also work on manipulative skills that allow them to throw and catch a ball, kick a ball, or hit a light object in the air, such as a balloon.

The high school science curriculum in Shiloh includes a comprehensive study of biology. Students examine cells, gaining an appreciation for various cell structures and their functions. Cell division, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis are just a few cellular processes that students explore. Various ecosystems are examined, where students identify how homeostasis lends to the equilibrium of an ecosystem. The forces involved in evolution are also studied in depth. Students learn about natural selection, mutations, gene flow, and genetic drift.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

If your child requires additional assistance with their schoolwork, hiring a tutor is an excellent choice. However, there are considerations to make when choosing the right tutor for your child. First, your child’s tutor should have expertise in the subject area in which your child needs assistance. If your child is struggling with math, hiring a tutor with a degree in English may not be the wisest choice. Having a demonstrated level of study in the required subject is necessary. Second, a tutor should have experience teaching kids. Helping a student become proficient in a subject in which they are not performing well requires a tutor that is patient, caring, and an effective communicator. Lastly, your child’s tutor should be highly approachable, warm, and friendly. Again, struggling students need a lot of encouragement and positivity in order to be successful, and his or her tutor should exude these qualities.
