Shoreline District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Shoreline Public Schools follow the Washington State Standards for Reading, Writing, Math, and Science. The district has a four-year plan for implementing the Common Core State Standards in all subjects, in all its core classes. In addition to following the standards for instruction and assessment, Shoreline Public Schools implements the Response to Intervention Pyramid at all levels to ensure all students have access to the curriculum. The Mathematics curriculum also follows the Washington State Standards. In 2011, the district adopted the Prentice Hall Algebra curriculum for its high schools. This curriculum follows the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 series. This series not only focuses on the computation and algorithms associated with the subject, but with critical thinking and applications of the problems as well.

We currently cover the following Shoreline-area school district: Shoreline School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shoreline District Curriculum

The Washington State Standards are followed in the Sciences, just as in the other two disciplines. Students are required to takeBiology in their tenth grade year and pass the end of course Biology exam to be eligible for graduation. In addition to their Biology class, students must pick one more science in order to graduate. There are many options available including Physics, Chemistry, or Environmental Science.

In following the Washington State Standards in English Language Arts, the district has created materials that allow students to develop critical thinking skills while integrating both reading and writing. Students learn how reading and writing are related, and how to decipher information from a text on their own. The English Language Arts curriculum designers in the district have created lessons with activities and projects built in to ensure student success. In order to graduate from the district, all high school students must be able to write a persuasive essay.

Chalk Talk: Finding the Best Tutor

Tutors can help students raise their grades, prepare for specific tests or to work on one subject. It is important for parents to find the tutor that will work best with their child. There are a variety of ways to find tutors. First check with the guidance counselor for recommendations. Another option is an after-school clinic which are available in some schools. Here students can find help with homework or test preparation and usually they are ran by educators. Parents can also check with libraries or community center to see if they offer a tutoring program. Finally, a quick look through the yellow pages or searching on-line can also be an option as there are some centers that are listed in the yellow pages and there are several tutoring websites which offer one-on-one tutoring.
