Silverton District and Curriculum

The schools in Silverton follow Common Core Standards as the curriculum in Math and Language Arts and state developed frameworks in other core academic subjects. As students move through the grade levels, the skills and application will be repeated only just in different ways so your child can continue to perform in any task they are presented with in the real-world. Students are also expected to participate in community service during their high school and develop their collaborative and problem-solving skills through such activities.

We currently cover the following Silverton-area school district: Silver Falls School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Silverton District Curriculum

The Silver Falls School District uses a curriculum that establishes targets for learning in each grade that help students achieve success and use the foundation which they develop to more advanced skills in each subject by high school. In Language Arts, a major goal is to produce students who are capable of broad, analytic thought and are able to apply their critical thinking to fiction and non-fiction, media, and research resources. Being able to evaluate the quality of information and integrate other ideas into writing are fundamental goals of the curriculum.

The Science curriculum is designed to introduce students to content knowledge, the process of scientific inquiry, the ability to recognize how society changes due to scientific innovations, and also to bring about scientific literacy. These goals are brought about through activities that require students to participate in hands-on activities that allow them to explore and communicate about scientific phenomenon. They learn how to test hypotheses, design experiments, and present their conclusions.

Chalk Talk: Note-Taking Strategies

Note-taking is one of the skills students develop that can make a significant difference in their performance on exams and other assignments. It helps students retain information because they are transferring it between their senses and using auditory, visual and hands-on means to learn information. There are also some ideas that you and your child can consider to learn what “tips” or “tricks” he or she can use and understand to help them learn better. What words or symbols will help your child remember a math concept? What phrase will help your child remember the plot of the novel they are reading or who said a famous quote they’ll need for a Social Studies test? The sooner your child’s note-taking becomes easier to use, the less preparation they’ll need for an assignment.
