Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Skiatook District Curriculum

In Mathematics, decimal numbers begin to appear in the middle elementary grades. Adding and subtracting decimals and furthering the understanding of place value are required, and the instructor uses a variety of materials to teach this concept. Math manipulatives, such as base ten blocks, cubes, coins (when adding and subtracting money), and other materials such as classroom technology (computer programs and Smartboards) are utilized.

In Language Arts, the standards include understanding and comprehending literal text. Pre-reading strategies are essential, and the objectives consist of activating prior knowledge, making predictions of the text, ask questions of what may be answered within the reading, and be familiar with the purpose of the text (to entertain, to persuade, or to inform). The students then read and comprehend a variety of texts after the pre-reading techniques and answer questions from the prior predictions and questions they had.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of the Math Specialist

The math specialist is a very important position that has many roles. The math specialist usually goes from school to school to help teachers implement better ways to instruct the students in math, and they visit all of the grade levels. This employee also studies and desegregates math testing data and stays on top of testing changes, the Department of Education’s math current objectives, and researches the top teaching techniques for all areas of mathematics. She or he also meets with colleagues, such as administrators, and teaches in-services to the teachers. Some larger school systems have more than one math specialist with one working with primary and elementary math and the other focusing on middle school and high school math.
