South Bend District and Curriculum

South Bend Community School Corporation follows the curriculum prescribed by the Indiana Department of Education. For students to make informed decisions about their lives and make valuable contributions to their communities, they require more in terms of knowledge and skills than ever before. We follow the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English/Language Arts and Mathematics in which the curriculum provides clear and consistent understanding of the skills that students are expected to learn at each grade level.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Bend District Curriculum

The English and Language Art curriculum provides fundamental skills for lifelong learning and strong literacy and communication skills. Additionally, the use of technology for communication is a part of the curriculum. South Bend Community School Corporation uses its excellent resources to engage students in the developing an excellent level of reading, writing, and oral communication skills.

The Mathematics curriculum is also based on Indiana’s Common Core Standards. Students become able to understand and apply mathematics, both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers and students work together to connect math to practical problem solving applications. The Science curriculum also focuses in on problem-solving methodology
and content acquisition in areas like biology, earth science, chemistry and physics, while seeking to engage students’ curiosity and relevant instruction.

Keeping Informed: Recent South Bend Educational News

  • Three SBSCS Named Four Star Schools - SBSCS's Hamilton Traditional School, Kennedy Primary Academy and LaSalle Intermediate Academy are Indiana Four Star Schools. For a school to achieve this award, End of Course Assessments and other academic measures must fall in the top 25th percentile in comparsion with other schools.
  • SBCS Nutrition Program - South Bend Community School Corporation provides school meals with food combinations that follow the basic ground rules of nutrition. Good nutrition and a balanced diet are essential for learning and student achievement. Students are still growing therefore need nourishment and fuel for growth to meet exhausting demands of their busy days.
  • Crossing Educational Center - The Crossing Educational Center serves high school dropouts and has experienced progressively rising enrollment. South Bend is adding two new campuses to this program. These will be located within neighborhoods around the city and hold classes geared toward young adults. Once these students complete the graduation requirements, they will receive diplomas from their home schools in South Bend.
