South Bruce Peninsula District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The aim of the Ontario Curriculum, which guides teaching and learning in the districts, is to provide students with a broad set of learning opportunities through which they may determine their goals for future pursuits. Through this curriculum, the standards for learning are detailed on a grade-by-grade level, and the abilities which students will develop are laid out clearly. Although assessments in Math and Literacy are required for graduation, students have a number of other courses such as Languages, History, the Arts, Outdoor Education, or Technology, all of which help students develop knowledge and creativity.

We currently cover the following South Bruce Peninsula-area school districts: Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board.

These courses are supported by the learning strategies developed in math in areas problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and the construction of structural models that help guide decisions and solutions. The literacy and communication skills developed in English courses also support students ability to critically read in these content areas, present information learned, connect knowledge, and express their understanding through written and oral communication.

The schools have increased their academic opportunities in science and technology, and students foundation in investigating scientific concepts can be useful in the areas where they are able to plan and develop ideas using technology. The goal of preparing students for an ever-changing world in which they may pursue diverse interests is seen through from the fundamental skills that students gain in elementary school to the opportunities for advanced learning in high school.

Chalk Talk: Volunteer Opportunities for Teens

When a teen is looking for a little more responsibility, they could look at volunteering. There are many locations that like to have teens help. One place for a teen to check is hospitals. If the teen has an interest in medicine, this would be a good launching point. Some of the positions they may help with include stocking supplies, transporting patients, or even making deliveries. Veterinary offices or animal shelters is also a good place for those that enjoy animals. The jobs expected may include cleaning kennels, feeding or walking animals and more. If the teen enjoys plants and working outdoors, they can look into helping at a garden center or a nursery. They may be asked to trim outdoor areas, weed, water or others. For more ideas ask neighbors and friends.
