South Brunswick District and Curriculum

Children in South Brunswick Township attend one of eleven schools in the South Brunswick School District, which serves over 8,000 students from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade. The mission of the district is to prepare students to be lifelong learners, excellent decision makers, critical thinkers and effective communicators. This mission is accomplished by ensuring that all schools in the district provide a learning environment that is safe and promotes creativity, social-emotional growth and academic rigor. All curricula in the district are developed with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards in mind.

We currently cover the following South Brunswick-area school district: South Brunswick School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Brunswick District Curriculum

The South Brunswick School District has developed curricula according to the guidelines outlined in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) and the Common Core State Standards. Curriculum development for the seven core areas is governed by the NJCCCS: social studies, science, health and physical education, languages, technology, the arts, and 21st Century life and careers.

The Common Core State Standards provide rigorous learning benchmarks for K-12 students in the areas of math and language arts. These standards have been adopted nationwide in an effort to emphasize student achievement in these areas. Students in elementary school language arts classes learn the basics of reading and writing, effective communication, and speaking and listening skills. These essential building blocks allow students to begin to develop a “linguistic toolkit” that will stay with them the rest of their lives. In middle school, students add to this toolkit by learning to identify important elements of a story, including characters, plot and idea development.

Chalk Talk: Why Community Service Is So Important

Being an active member of the community involves giving up time to make that community a better place. Community service is an excellent way for kids to make connections with members of the community, but also gives them a great way to apply what they learn in school to real world situations. Students can use the communication skills they learn in language arts classes to effectively communicate with diverse populations in the community. The organizational skills required to complete a complex math problem can be used to organize a food drive or yard waste clean-up day. The teamwork kids learn in P.E. class can be used to work together to paint an elderly person’s home. Whatever the task might be, serving others has many benefits to both the community and to the kids who serve it.
