Chalk Talk: Storytelling for Kindergarten Students

Teachers read a lot to students in the form of short books and stories. Many of them though engage in fantasy storytelling to help entice children's imagination and help them to open their minds to many possibilities of learning. Every elementary class needs to make time for engaging students in storytelling and rhyme and encouraging students to sing along. Many students learned stories through rhyme and chanting to get a deeper sense of meaning from the stories. Teachers can learn to creatively use storytelling as a break in the day to help students shift their focus and see the fun in learning. Teachers can choose to ask questions for recall on themes, characters and their motivations. There is much wonder in storytelling as children feel like they are entering the world of the characters and are put in their place. Children learn by watching, observing the characters and the pictures in storybooks and how they react emotionally to events. They learn what is right and wrong and different values of love, care, compassion and empathy.
