Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Gate District Curriculum

South Gate’s elementary school students take part in a math curriculum that provides a strong foundation in basic math skills. Students work with each of the four operations to solve problems involving whole numbers. This includes working with multistep word problems in which remainders have to be interpreted. Students also work on an understanding of base ten and learn to generalize place value in multi-digit whole numbers.

The high school social studies curriculum in South Gate includes an in-depth study of U.S. history. As part of their studies, students examine the impact of the United States on the modern world. Learners explore U.S. foreign policy, beginning with how the United States brought about the end of the Cold War and the spread of democracy in Eastern Europe. The nation’s involvement in international bodies, such as NATO and the United Nations is explored, with students recognizing the interdependence of nations in the modern world.

Chalk Talk: Great Reasons to Attend Community College

Community college offers an excellent and affordable opportunity to begin one’s collegiate studies. Community colleges are much less expensive than universities, making it a great option for students on a budget. Beginning college at a two-year institution also generally means smaller class sizes. Rather than having an introductory course at a university with several hundred students, an introductory course at most junior colleges has several dozens students at most. Community college is also a good opportunity for students to explore various majors if they haven’t yet picked one. For career areas that don’t require a four-year degree, community colleges offer many two-year degree and certificate programs. Getting one of these shorter-term degrees or certificates makes students employable much more quickly and allows them to enter the workforce sooner than their university peers.
