Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Jordan District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum emphasizes continuity between branches of mathematics, which is designed to help students build up a broad understanding of mathematical principles. In particular, core mathematical practices, such as persevering to solve a problem, modeling problems with mathematics, and using structure and regularity to understand patterns in mathematics are taught at every grade level, with different concrete mathematical problems used to emphasize the elements of the procedure.

In high school, students take integrated math classes, which teach core principles of algebra and geometry. These courses ensure that students understand the links between these fields, and are current with both topics. After taking two years of math, students can choose either the traditional academic path of additional courses in algebra, pre-calculus, or calculus, or they can take topic-oriented math classes that allow them to apply their skills to real-world problems.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for College

College requires a lot of hard work from students, and it’s important to be as prepared as possible before you graduate from high school. Take courses that are challenging, to get used to the level of work you’ll have to do in your college classes. College courses require more independent reading than high school courses, so make sure that you have plenty of practice reading and interpreting what you read. College courses also require a lot of writing, so, if writing is difficult for you, ask for guidance from a teacher or tutor to improve your skills. Most importantly, think about what interests you, not just what degree you think will lead to the best career: if you’re passionate and interested in what you’re studying, you’re more likely to succeed!
