Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Lyon District Curriculum

South Lyon Community Schools allow students to become proficient in the English curriculum by allowing practice and examples for them to learn. At first, writing takes place in the form of drawing pictures. They then add simple words, then words to add details and description. These words help the reader to see the image that the student began with. In high school, they learn how to create essays and research papers which are aimed at the audience but maintain the author’s voice.

The history of the United States is included in South Lyons Community Schools curriculum. This study includes the political diplomatic, cultural and economic history and more. The time period stretches from the first explorations of the continent through current events. The students learn through typical discussions and through primary and secondary resources and technological resources. Through United States history the students learn how one event or the actions of one can affect the country.

South Lyon District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

South Lyons Community Schools curriculum is based on the educational standards set by the Michigan Department of Education. The focus of the curriculum is on critical thinking skills, analytical writing and effective communication skills, science literacy and problem solving skills, and mathematics. Students read complex texts in a variety of classes for comprehension and author intent. They write thoughtfully about their reading, using evidence they’ve gathered from the text to support their claims. In mathematics classes, students focus on a greater depth of learning, so that they understand how mathematical concepts work.

Chalk Talk: Careers for Students Interested in Environmental Science

Most schools offer environmental science classes but students and parents have difficulty understanding how this class can be used in the child’s future. A growing field, environmental science offers many options for students interested in pursuing this subject. One options is in the area of energy efficiency and water conservation. Through this field, students can demonstrate to others how they can maintain and upgrade their homes to build efficiency throughout their homes. They can also take the information gained in college classes to educate homeowners on the carbon footprint they leave behind. Another options is to work with the government as they develop ways to reduce greenhouse gas and increase sustainability programs. By talking with a career counselor, students can discover many other ways to use a degree in this area to build a successful career.
