Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Plainfield District Curriculum

The curricula at South Plainfield Public Schools are designed to meet the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core Standards. The former provides guidance with regard to learning in the following subjects: health and physical education, the arts, social studies, science, 21st Century life and careers, technology and world languages. The latter outlines what students should learn in math and language arts classes.

The mathematics curriculum focuses student learning on acquiring analytical, problem solving and abstract reasoning skills that are necessary for success in today’s fast-paced, highly technological world. By the time students leave elementary school, they will have a solid foundation in basic math such as addition and subtraction, as well as an understanding of fractions, long division, the place value system and beginning geometry. As students progress towards the end of middle school, they acquire the ability to formulate solutions to problems, and use functions to describe relationships and analyze space.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College

Choosing the right college is one of the most important – and daunting – tasks a teenager will face. If you’ve applied to a number of schools and have been accepted to several of them, the choice can be even more difficult. In order to make the right choice, consider going back to the beginning and revisiting the reasons why you identified each school as a potential candidate. Comparing your possible college choices on those original measures, whether it’s male-female ratio, class offerings or distance from home, might help you make your final decision. Also think about making a list of pros and cons about each school. What do they have to offer that you really like? What is it about each one that you wish was different? Ranking their haves and have-nots can help you clearly define a pecking order.
