South Portland District and Curriculum

The South Portland School District adheres to the belief that all students deserve to learn and be prepared for the 21st century. In service to the community, schools properly assess and educate students providing individualized education that is child centered. Lessons are planned to begin at the student’s unique level and build their knowledge base from there. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Portland District Curriculum

Using the backward Design Process, the elementary curriculum maps student expectations in math, science, social studies, music, art and physical education according to state and federal standards. The middle school curriculum follows the same process but also includes foreign language. The high school curriculum also includes foreign language. In addition, it includes a career preparation component, to get students ready and eager for postsecondary education or technical school.

Keeping Informed: Recent South Portland Educational News

  • South Portland Concert - The South Portland elementary schools have a wonderful music department. Students enjoy a range of musical activities and many receive scholarships as seniors when they continue in their musical education. At the end of every year, fifth and sixth graders put on a concert, showcasing their talents. It is an event for the community to showcase the talent and outstanding programs the schools provide.
  • A Piece of Naval History Will Tour Region Schools - Residents of the Maine Veteran' Home in South Paris, will be witness to the unveiling of a piece of the USS Arizona, a U.S. ship that sank during the attack. Although just a rusted piece of metal only 32 inches long, what it represents is monumental and will never be forgotten. The relic was placed in a display especially made so that veterans can take it to schools throughout the region.
  • Robotics Team takes a Win - The Riot Crew, South Portland High School's first ever robotics team, has surprised competitors and themselves by winning first place at the BAE Granite State Regional match. Professionals mentor students, guiding them through complex problem solving in engineering and design. Over 50,000 students participate world wide in the ultimate championship, which The Riot Crew aims to win as well.
