The curriculum used in the Granite School District is based on the Utah Core Standards, which aim to produce students who have necessary skills in English and Math, suitable for 21st century careers and college degrees. These skills are monitored and reinforced through frequent assessment, such as statewide exams three times a year. To support these learning goals, the Granite School District schools use a variety of techniques. For instance, they use a district-wide curricular plan in Mathematics to ensure a wide variety of supports for student learning, and support teachers with specific training and additional materials.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Salt Lake City District Curriculum

The Math curriculum integrates the study of different types of mathematics into the entire educational experience, such that the preparatory work for advanced study of algebra, geometry, statistics, and calculus is done over time from kindergarten on. Students are taught basic arithmetic in elementary schools, alongside the core principles of geometry and statistical analysis (such as graphing and charts). By sixth grade, they begin to work with variables, equations, and proofs. High school students take specific classes in algebra, geometry, and other branches of mathematics.

All elementary schools in the district include technology in their programs, giving students access to computers, iPads, and other tools to support their education. At the junior high and high school level, technology is integrated into the curriculum throughout all subjects, with students having the ability to learn about and use technology both in specific classes and throughout traditional classes.

Keeping Informed: Recent South Salt Lake City Educational News

  • Innovative Learning - High school students from South Salt Lake have the opportunity to intern with the new small life sciences companies being sponsored by the BioInnovations Gateway in the Granite Education Center. They can work on exciting scientific discoveries, such as fighting cancer by studying how cells mutate and grow, how to test for environmental contaminants in the human body, and how to build emergency rescue equipment. The student interns go on to get jobs working at biotech companies, or to attend college to become scientists themselves.
  • Immersion Program News - Two principals from South Salt Lake elementary schools have been invited to France by the French minister of education. Their schools house French immersion programs, which begin elementary students in bilingual French & English classrooms in first grade. They will travel to Paris to learn more about teaching French and how to support students and their programs.
  • Learning, Technology, and Laughter! - Granite School District has the most-established social media presence of any school district in Utah. When students on Twitter were complaining about going back to school after the winter break, the district’s Twitter account engaged and joked with them, as a way of diffusion the tension. The school district believes that digital interaction is one of the best ways to stay connected with its broader community.
