Chalk Talk: What Type of Student Should Do an Independent Study?

Any type of student should, and can, take on an independent study. An independent study offers a student the opportunity to create original scholarship and pursue a subject that is meaningful to them. This provides a unique opportunity to gain the skills of self-directed learning, inquiry and investigation, and producing work that shows the newly gained knowledge. One possible way to take on an independent study is to combine two subjects, like science and history, and explore ways in which they are related. Independent studies also give students the chance to work with an advisor who will be able to provide attention to the subject.
