Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Southgate District Curriculum

The Southgate Community School District teaches the Language Arts Common Core standards which detail the skills and strategies students are to learn. A main focus of these standards is the ability of students to cite information in the text as evidence for their opinion or answer. Students are first introduced to this skill in Kindergarten when teachers ask them why they think an event occurred in a story. As they enter the upper elementary grades, they will usually begin highlighting the text evidence during tests and group reading.

This strategy is beneficial because it forces students to go back and check their answers. Once students begin middle school they should be adept at using this strategy for reading, however they will then start to use it in other subjects. The Common Core has shifted the reading curriculum to include more non-fiction, which will be integrated into Science and Social Studies.
