Spartanburg District and Curriculum

The Spartanburg Public Schools collaborate with families and the community to create the maximum educational experience for students. Students will become successful, contributing members of society through unmatched excellence academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and the arts. It is the goal of Spartanburg schools to include both standards and challenges in the curriculum which require higher level critical thinking skills.

We currently cover the following Spartanburg-area school district: Spartanburg Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Spartanburg District Curriculum

Spartanburg Public Schools have adopted the Common Core State Standards as a way to require these higher level thinking skills from their students. Common Core English Language Arts standards require students to not only learn how to read, but to invite students to also interpret what they read. Students are asked to use their language arts skills to both read and write across the subjects.

In Common Core aligned math classes students are required to focus on fewer aspects of mathematics, but at a greater depth than in the past. Rather than have ten units on ten concepts throughout the year students may only focus on five or six concepts in a school year and practice it until completely mastered. For example, rather than simply introduce basic addition, students will master their addition facts, and be able to complete complex addition problems and even add four digits in second grade. From there, students develop a sense of mathematic operations and how to manipulate equations and perform higher math functions.

Chalk Talk: Financing Post-Secondary Education

The thought of paying for college can be daunting, but it’s never too early (or too late) to help your child plan for college. Help your son or daughter begin saving money as early as possible. Encourage them to give up the things they want in order to save money for something they need, a quality education. Teach them to work hard and save their earnings. A student who works 20 hours a week while going to classes can pay the average tuition at a State University. Not only will they be able to pay their tuition, but studies say students who work while in school are more successful academically because they learn time management skills. Giving your child these simple financial keys can set them up to successfully complete their education with little to no debt.
