Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Spring Valley District Curriculum

The K-5 Literacy curriculum teaches phonemic awareness, which means that students are taught the sounds of letters and how to use those sounds to sound out words by syllables. Students learn phonics, oral fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Students also learn writing skills, which includes learning the process of writing, the types of writing and writing assessment. Reading and writing skills are used across the curriculum. Without learning good skills in reading and writing, students cannot be successful in school.

Students in Kindergarten learn number recognition and they work off of base ten operations, learning to count by using objects. They learn to add and subtract by removing and adding objects, using early algebraic skills. Geometry skills are used by learning shapes and sorting and categorizing them. Students learn to both write and recognize numbers. The math program is designed to prepare students for real life situations where they will apply learned knowledge.

Make sure you communicate effectively with your child and discuss together the activities she is interested in joining. How much time does he have to just hang around the house?
