Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Springfield Township District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Springfield Public Schools is undertaken with the goal of preparing students to be politically, socially and economically productive members of society. In order to accomplish that goal, the district has developed a comprehensive K-12 curriculum that focuses student learning on relevant knowledge they need to be successful in their educational pursuits. The curriculum is research-based and standards-based, using the recommendations of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards as guidelines.

The social studies curriculum not only provides students with insight into past events and how those events have shaped the world in which we live today, but also ensures that students develop critical skills. By constructing timelines and identifying how events relate to one another across time, students develop chronological thinking skills. Spatial thinking is also emphasized in lessons where students infer information from maps and examine human-environmental interactions.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Physical Education

Physical education classes have many benefits that go beyond the improvements in health, fitness and strength. PE classes offer students insight into how to live in a healthy manner, such as proper grooming techniques, how to eat healthy and the value of regular exercise. Physical education is also a preventative measure against disease. As children have become less and less physically active, PE class offers an outlet to get some exercise and combat obesity and diabetes. The long-term goal of physical education is to teach kids how to lead active lifestyles. By instilling the value of healthy living at a young age, students can grow up and lead physically and mentally healthy lives.
